Friuli-Venezia Giulia is one of the 20 regions of Italy and one of five autonomous regions with special statute. The regional capital is Trieste on the Gulf of Trieste, a bay of the Adriatic Sea.
Friuli-Venezia Giulia has an area of 7,924 square kilometres (3,059 sq mi) and about 1.2 million inhabitants. A natural opening to the sea for many central European countries, the region is traversed by the major transport routes between the east and west of Southern Europe. It encompasses the historical-geographical region of Friuli and a small portion of the historical region of Venezia Giulia – also known in English as the Julian March – each with its own distinct history, traditions and identity.

European Capital of Culture
Nova Gorica and Gorizia have become the first-ever cities to jointly hold the European Capital of Culture (ECoC) title, embodying the spirit of European unity. With major investments in cross-border infrastructure and cultural initiatives, the region has been transformed under the inspiring slogan Go Borderless.
Over 400 events are featured in the official programme, along with countless more in the accompanying schedule, making 2025 a truly extraordinary year for both Slovenia and Italy. The stage is set for a year of cultural brilliance, with a new amphitheatre taking shape, the railway station undergoing a major renovation and a vibrant lineup of screenings, concerts and dance performances awaiting in both cities.
WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?
The title of European Capital of Culture is given every year to two cities of two Member States of the European Union. The initiative's aims include: protecting the richness and variety of different cultures in Europe, promoting the shared cultural values and achievements of the European nations and guaranteeing the effects of culture on the long-term development of cities. In addition, the title is also an excellent opportunity for re-launching their local tourism industry and economy through cultural developments.
